XML News Feed
Digital Division has added an XML/RSS
feed to its Website to allow you better access its press
releases and newsletters.
What is RSS?
RSS stands for “Really Simple
Syndication”. An RSS feed contains a set of headlines
and links to the pages where you can find full articles.
RSS files are composed in a language called XML that
can be easily interpreted by a wide variety of technologies
ranging from desktops to web pages to mobile devices.
| What can
RSS do for you? |
|
Benefits
- Protect your inbox
from spam. You don’t need to
submit your email address to subscribe to an
RSS feed.
- Get all your news
in one place. You can use an RSS reader
to read your news in one place, your way. RSS
feeds can be retrieved from your desktop to
your cell phone, however you choose.
- Put your favorite
news on your home page. Using homepages
like My Yahoo!, you can integrate RSS
feeds with your other favorite news sources.
How to Use RSS Feeds
Subscribing to an RSS feed is easy, but before
you can subscribe you have to choose an RSS reader.
You can find free, popular RSS reader programs
at any download site, like Download.com.
- Directly copying
feeds. When you want to subscribe to
a feed, look for a button that says XML. If
you right click on the button and select “Copy
Shortcut” or “Copy Link Location”
you’ll have a direct link to the RSS feed
(like this one).
Then all you have to do is tell your RSS reader
that you want to subscribe to a feed, paste
the link location from your clipboard, and you’re
done.
- Scanning Web sites
for feeds. If these directions sound
a little intense, you might want to try just
entering the name or URL of a Web site that
has an RSS feed. Most RSS readers will scan
that site and let you know what RSS feeds that
site has that are available to subscribe to.
- Do you Yahoo?
If so, you can add RSS feeds to your My Yahoo!
homepage easily without downloading and installing
an RSS reader. Many Web sites provide a link
that automatically adds its RSS feed to My
Yahoo!. Try this link to automatically
add
Digital Division news to My Yahoo!
- Use your mobile
device. You can download an RSS reader
to your PDA or Java-enabled mobile phone to
get news on the go.
|
| Benefits
- Find a wider audience
for your content. Users who are reading
RSS feeds are surfing for content less and using
RSS readers more. Don’t ignore this growing
audience—just syndicate in RSS so you
can reach them, too.
- Get more traffic.
Because RSS feeds are made to be link back to
your Web site, it reaches out farther than a
Web site can alone.
- Achieve better search
engine visibility for your message.
The more links come back to your Web site, the
higher your search engine rankings. And because
RSS feeds are designed to be readable by search
engines and other kinds of information technologies,
they help search engines scan the content of
your Web site more accurately.
- Join a growing Internet
marketing trend. If the results yielded
by your online advertisements, e-newsletters,
or other kinds of online marketing are dwindling,
why not try something new?
